The death toll from the armed attack in the centre of the Polish city of Kraków on 7 November has risen to 6. This was confirmed by Krzysztof Klęczar, head of the Lesser Poland Voivodeship.

In a statement by the voivodeship, Klęczar said: “At present we can confirm that 6 people died as a result of the shooting and 15 are injured. The injured are under the care of doctors in Kraków hospitals.” According to reports, 12 of the injured are in serious condition.

According to Lesser Poland police, 4 of those killed were women and 2 were men. The attack took place at around 15:00 local time on Kraków's main square, near Sławkowska Street. The attacker reportedly drove onto the square and opened fire on random people.

The attacker was shot by police officers who arrived at the scene and was detained. He is reported to have undergone surgery and to be in a stable condition. He was wearing a Polish army camouflage uniform, a helmet and a bulletproof vest. A ministry spokesperson said he is a Polish citizen, while police said the only known perpetrator of the attack is in custody.

Polish Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński said two police officers suffered gunshot wounds during the attack. According to the minister, one of them is in a very serious condition with three gunshot wounds and is undergoing surgery. Kierwiński wrote: “Thanks to their heroic actions, the attacker was quickly apprehended.” According to police, the first patrol went into action 23 seconds after the report.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on social media: “We will clarify all the circumstances of this crime.” He also appealed to “politicians of all parties” not to exploit this tragedy for political purposes. Kraków Mayor Łukasz Gibała declared mourning in the city until 11 November.

Earlier reports said 5 people had been killed and 12 injured in the attack. Prime Minister Donald Tusk had called the incident an act of terrorism. Kraków is Poland's second-largest city, and its historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
