Vance: We are reasonably optimistic about the prospects of a negotiated settlement with Iran

US Vice President JD Vance told reporters at Joint Base Andrews on November 2 that he was optimistic about the prospects of reaching a negotiated settlement with Iran.

Vance said: "We've had a number of good conversations with the Iranians." According to him, he had spoken with Donald Trump on the matter about an hour earlier, and both of them feel reasonably optimistic about the prospects of a negotiated settlement.

The US Vice President said: "We're going to keep on working at it. The Iranians are always a little unpredictable." Vance added: "We certainly made some progress. We'll see if we can make some more."

Vance said he sensed the Iranians' strong interest in their sovereignty and in rebuilding their economy. According to him, there is a path to a deal, but it requires a firm and verifiable Iranian commitment not to rebuild the nuclear program.

Vance's remarks came as mediation efforts between Iran and the United States continued. On the evening of November 2, a Qatari delegation headed by an adviser to Qatar's Prime Minister and Foreign Minister travelled to Tehran for consultations with the Iranian side. The same day, following reports on the Iran–US talks, the price of Brent crude fell to 108 dollars per barrel.
